INSURANCE:-
The Independent Midwives Association is currently unable to purchase Indemnity Insurance, and whilst my aim as an autonomous practitioner is to provide the safest and best midwifery care that I can, there can never be a complete guarantee that no adverse outcome will occur.
To maintain my registration and to ensure my practice is maintained to a high standard, I complete an Intention to Practice form annually, and attend regular training days which include dealing with emergencies until help arrives. I am interviewed annually by a local NHS appointed Supervisor of Midwives about my clinical practice and who also ensures that my equipment and drugs are legally safe. I work within The Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) Midwives Rules and Codes of Practice. I liaise with other health practitioners including general practitioners(GPs), obstetricians, health visitors, ultra-sonographers if and when necessary.
Within the NHS model there is a method of financial re-dress by being able to sue the hospital or individual practitioner through their vicarious liability cover should you require to do so.
If you have any concerns regarding my practice please let me know so we can resolve them at the earliest opportunity, or if you prefer I can put you in touch with my Supervisor of Midwives who will advise you further.
